Getting a driver's license with the help of new technologies

simulator

People of my age have been learning to drive in driving schools for quite a long time. Personally, the practical part of my training took place on an old Ford model car. The instructor was an experienced driver - a man in his fifties. He was always prompt and gave good advice, which helped me to pass the driving test from the first time. That was surprising, as many people had to retake this discipline many times.

But today things are a bit different. Nowadays, even in small towns, almost any driving school has a driving simulator. It sounds a little wild, but I will describe in detail. The whole design has a general and finished look. The trainee sits in the driver's seat, often resembling part of a sports car or an expensive gaming computer chair, in front of which there is a large monitor, and often not one. All because multi-screen simulators give the effect of the most realistic immersion in a virtual environment. Instead of the usual keyboard in front of the applicant for a driver's license is a full-fledged steering wheel of the car with mounted paddle shifters. In addition, a manual gearbox is attached to the side, observing all the proportions of a real car, as well as "on the floor" are the clutch, brake and gas pedals. It seems to be a useless toy, but before getting behind the wheel of a real vehicle you will have to "roll" not one hour behind the wheel of such a simulator.

I have always been very distrustful of this kind of simulators, although they are present in many areas. So I personally have never understood or seen the result of training athletes shooters or military on shooting simulator. I did not perceive the virtual shooting range, thinking that it is absolutely unnecessary shooting practice, unable to prepare the shooter even for the recoil of the weapon. But after reading the reviews and training process of several world-class professional shooters I realized how wrong I was. They use all the new products, including the shooting practice app for smartphone. I think it is not for nothing that even airplane pilots are trained in a similar way, namely using modern flight simulators.

So even today a learner of driving can get fully accustomed to the location of all elements of car control, develop muscle memory and prepare for the moment of driving a real vehicle. As much as we would like to, modern technology has penetrated almost all areas of our lives, especially learning, even in medicine. Perhaps we should not reject them, but try to understand how much benefit they can bring to society and how many mistakes they can save us from.
